APD: Newborn baby found dead in Albuquerque dumpster

A newborn baby was discovered in a dumpster near some Albuquerque businesses Tuesday morning.

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – A newborn baby was discovered dead in a dumpster near some Albuquerque businesses Tuesday morning.

This happened along Rio Grande Boulevard near I-40 early Tuesday morning. Police are just beginning its investigation.

“Any time a baby’s death is reported, it affects a lot of different people in a lot of different ways,” said APD Public Information Officer Gilbert Gallegos.

Police say unhoused people were looking through a dumpster when they came across a baby partially wrapped inside a blanket. They immediately got a hold of on-site security and 911 was called around 3 a.m. Tuesday.

“They were able to get into the dumpster and locate the infant, the newborn baby, determined it was deceased and that’s when our detectives were called out to start an investigation,” said Gallegos.

According to APD, no one showed up at any area hospitals overnight. APD is asking anyone with information to come forward.

“Detectives also believe that the mother of this newborn may be in need of medical attention, so we are putting a plea out there for anyone who may know who the mother is to get that medical attention, that is first and foremost,” said Gallegos.

A nearby business owner, Alex, says while things happen here or there, this was not the scene he was expecting to drive up to coming into work.

“Honestly, it’s not surprising, you do see a lot of stuff going on around here. This is the worst thing that I have seen with a baby involved, it’s real tragic, but we do see a lot of stuff happening around here,” said Alex, owner of Old Town Tire & Automotive.

APD was not able to answer how long the baby was in the dumpster before they were discovered.

We also don’t know the gender of the child.
